This was a wonderful read on an early immigrant family. I enjoyed the characterizations of Pearl, her sisters, mother, and father. The turmoil portrayed by this family was so realistic it could not be fiction—the father divorces the mother to marry the sixteen year old hired help. The mother watches the divorced husband and new bride’s house from across the bay. The scene of the tornado in Kansas with the rabbits surviving, and how the mother died just had to be real. “The installment plan was introduced, and we loved it.” The saying, “real life is stranger than fiction” rings true in “Saturday Night Dance Club.” In many ways, I found this a remarkable historical novel depicting a family living through WWI, the stock market crash, and great depression. Well written, with compelling characters and a believable story line, humor. and pathos. A look at the triumph of the human spirit over the vicissitudes of life in the mid-20th century.

This book was really kind of fun. It follows the main character into adulthood. I like the way that it captured history in the story line.
Couldn't put this book down ... terrific storyline, believable characters, good morals, and sweet relationships between husbands and wives, friends and family. Great feel-good book.
